Project

LIFE GoProFor (GoProFor)

Description:

The project aims to "distill" the Good Practices from LIFE projects selected at the European level between 1992 and 2018.

Through the analysis of hundreds of LIFE projects on sustainable forest management, protection of biodiversity, habitats and rare species, 15 application themes have been identified under the 5 main categories of: (i) Forest biodiversity; (ii) Forest Habitat; (iii) Invasive species; (iv) Climate change; and (v) Planning, Management and Governance. The 3 application themes in the Climate Change category are carbon and biomass management, management practices for the adaptation and resilience of forest ecosystems, and forest fire prevention techniques.

The project intends to encourage the exchange of experiences and best practices for the management of the biodiversity of forest habitats in the Natura 2000 network, with the aim of increasing the level of awareness both of the institutional managers of these areas and of all operators whose activities influence with their activities on the conservation of habitats and species.

In this context, an online database of good practices is being developed and 100 good practices have already been selected: 79 of them are derived from Italian LIFE projects, while 21 are from projects that have been developed in other European countries (15 GPs from French projects, 4 from Greece, 1 from Spain and 1 from Slovenia). A beta version of the database is available at this link.
