Mountains cover 30% of the Earth's surface, and 17% of the EU population lives in these areas. They play a crucial role in providing resources and supporting communities, yet they face increasing challenges due to climate change—challenges that are often intensified by insufficient adaptation measures.
The EU-funded MountResilience project aims to strengthen the capacity of European mountain regions and communities to adapt to climate change and advance their transition toward a climate-resilient society. Through six regional demonstrators and four replicator regions, the project will conceptualise, test, and scale up multilevel, multidimensional, and transferable climate adaptation strategies and nature-based solutions. This approach will address policy and societal needs, while also taking citizen behaviour into account, to better assess and respond to the specific climate impacts affecting mountain areas.
MountResilience is committed to reinforcing the resilience of these regions by developing, piloting, and expanding flexible climate adaptation solutions. Its work integrates policy considerations, societal demands, and community engagement, ensuring that strategies are both locally relevant and widely applicable.
Objectives of the project:
Lay the groundwork for transformative climate adaptation in European mountain regions
Establish local demonstrators to develop and test innovative climate solutions with broad community participation
Share knowledge and best practices across project regions and beyond, fostering cross-border learning and the uptake of adaptation solutions
Raise awareness of climate change adaptation, engage communities, disseminate results, and collaborate with related initiatives
Prepare the conditions for scaling up climate adaptation solutions and other key project outcomes
