Description

This report provides an overview of adaptation options to climate change for Europe and Central Asia (ECA). In order to present best practices in climate change adaptation, the reports describes the processes and conditions that adaptation options should address. The document provides an overview of the past drivers and impacts of natural disasters occurring in ECA countries. It reviews available climate projections and compares ECA countries through exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity indices. Finally, it presents best practices in adaptation planning around the world and discusses possible actions to improve resilience. The proposed measures are grouped per sectors: natural resources (water, biodiversity, and the coastal environment), health, the “unbuilt” environment (agriculture and forestry), and the built environment (infrastructure and housing). The last chapter concludes with a discussion of two areas in great need of strengthening given the changing climate: disaster preparedness and hydrometeorological services.
