Description

Albania is expected to be confronted with worsened energy security over the medium and long term due to climate change. Most of the energy is produced via hydropower. Since climate change will affect runoff of about 20 percent by 2050, this may result in a reduction of electricity generation of about 15% for large hydropower plants and of 20% for small hydropower plants. Extreme rainfall is also expected to threaten electricity generation, as well as sea level rise and heat waves.

The report is developed within the Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP). This is a global knowledge and technical assistance trust fund program administered by the World Bank and assists low- and middle-income countries to increase know-how and institutional capacity to achieve environmentally sustainable energy solutions for poverty reduction and economic growth. The report assess the vulnerability of Albania's electricity system and clarifies some recommendations for the country to decrease the vulnerabilty.
