CPME policy briefing on climate change and health: immediate healthcare sector’s action needed

Description

In its 2023 policy paper on climate and health, the Standing Committee of European Doctors (CPME) advocates for healthcare sector’s climate action as a necessary and immediate priority. Key recommendations to policy-makers and the healthcare sector in the policy paper include:
- to reduce greenhouse gases emissions
- to strengthen the climate resilience of health systems
- to support mental health
- to consider health inequalities in climate response strategies
- to develop effective climate epidemiology methods for climate related illness and death
- to increase awareness on climate-related health risks in all policy areas
- to train healthcare professionals
- to integrate health in climate policies

The policy paper highlights several risk areas, including extreme weather events, interlinkages with air quality, effects on communicable diseases, impacts affecting mental health, food system effects and health inequalities.

Since doctors are seen as trustworthy sources when it comes to giving health information to people, the specific role doctors can play to raise awareness of the health impacts of climate change among their patients and policy-makers is emphasized.
