This report, by Economist Impact, covers the intersection of climate change and healthcare systems in Europe, the health impacts of climate change, and how healthcare professionals are responding to climate change and improving the system’s sustainability. The study includes results of (i) a literature review of how healthcare systems in France, Germany and the UK are responding to climate change and on the role of healthcare professionals, (ii) a survey among 75 hospitals doctors and 75 nurses from France, Germany and the UK, and (iii) interviews with experts from government, hospitals, medical professional associations and NGOs.
The study finds among others that:
- Many hospital doctors and nurses agree on the need to better prepare patients and adapt healthcare systems to be more sustainable
- Those with chronic conditions, the elderly and those with lower socio-economic status are perceived as most at risk
- The greatest risks are expected from heatwaves and air pollution
- Healthcare professionals want to be change agents
