Description

Europe faces overwhelming losses and destruction from climate-related disasters as the continent is warming faster than any other region in the world. 2023 was the hottest year on record with disasters across Europe costing more than €77 billion.  Estimated direct damages from the 2023 wildfires were around €2 billion in Greece, €1 billion in Italy, and around €913 million in Spain. Extreme heat has claimed more than 60,000 lives in 2022 in Europe and by 2050 this could rise to 120,000 heat-related deaths per year.

Based on research from the World Bank and European Commission, a new reports focus on prioritising investments in disaster and climate resilience providing decision-makers and practitioners with evidence, data, and tools to improve disaster and climate resilience in Europe, contributing to more effective and strategic investments in prevention, preparedness and adaptation.
