Mental health and climate change - focus on Türkiye
Description
This briefing, written in collaboration with Psychiatric Association of Turkey, highlights the various mental health impacts from climate change, including from extreme weather events. For instance, research showed that 20 to 30 percent of hurricane and flood survivors suffered from depression and/or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It also includes an overview of concepts such as eco-anxiety, solastalgia, ecological mourning, ecological migration, eco-guilt, and eco-paralysis, summarised by psychiatric experts as well as public health specialists. This briefing includes five recommendations to decision-makers in Turkey to better address the interlinkages between climate change and mental health, and strengthen people’s resilience.
