The European Food Safety Authority developed a foresight study on future challenges for the safety of food and feed from the oceans.
The objectives of the project were:
- To look at the future uses of the oceans and ocean resources, and discuss possible relevance for EFSA’s preparedness to future risks and challenges to food and feed safety in the context of global changes (including climate change)
- To characterise emerging risks for the safety of food/feed from the oceans.
Following a multi-criteria participatory prioritisation exercise, scenarios were produced for sea transport and trade, aquaculture, and coastal and open sea-bed mining. The project also explored the impact of climate change in these areas. Potential implications (including emerging risks) for the safety of food and feed from the oceans and challenges and opportunities for Europe’s sustainability objectives are presented in the final report.
