It introduces key concepts that are important for understanding and mitigating this phenomenon.

Further chapters each focus on a specific strategy to tackle heat island effect in communities: Trees and Vegetation, Green roofs, Cool Roofs and Cool pavements. The sixth and final chapter gives examples of implementation of these strategies.
