Water resources: quantity and flows - EEA SOER 2010 thematic assessment

The European environment — state and outlook 2010 (SOER 2010) is a document primarily aimed at policymakers, in Europe and beyond, involved with framing and implementing policies that could support environmental improvements in Europe. At the time of development, many water bodies were at risk of failing to meet the aim of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) to achieve good status by 2015. It was proposed that future policies should encourage demand management through actions such as increasing water efficiency and that water management would benefit from applying an ecosystems perspective, using floodplains and groundwater aquifers for storing water, and making room (space) for rivers.
