See all EU institutions and bodiesThis session, titled "Introduction to Sponge Measures," will provide insights into the concept of sponge measures, their role in flood and drought mitigation, and the current state of knowledge on sponge measures.
SpongeScapes is an EU research project which accelerates solutions that improve the sponge functioning of soil, groundwater, and surface water ecosystems, with the aim to improve the resilience of European landscapes against extreme hydrometeorological events such as floods and droughts.
Webinar speakers:
- Ellis Penning (Deltares) will present insights from the policy brief "From Drainage to Water Retention: Advancing a Paradigm Shift Towards Sponge Landscapes for Enhanced Climate Resilience".
- Benoît Fribourg-Blanc (International Office for Water, OiEau) will share findings from the report "Critical Review of Existing Knowledge on Sponge Functions for Different Climatic Zones, Soils, and Land Uses in Europe." This review identifies knowledge gaps and recommendations to strengthen evidence-based approaches to sponge measures.
