Objective(s)

Guiding the organisation and moderation of participatory workshops and ensuring that the discussions are focused on adaptation pathways in a playful manner.

Adaption pathways are co-created with respect to tipping points. Participants are thereby asked to think of the difference between incremental and transformational adaptation solutions.

Short description

Facilitating well-prepared workshops for communities that systematically prepare what and how a community sees their adaptation pathways.

Readiness for use

Applications

The Playbook was used first in 2022, in 4 regions in Europe: Galicia (Spain), Sardinia (Italy), West Country Region (UK), Guadeloupe (France) and 3 cities: Lappeenranta (Finland), Egaleo (Greece), Gjøvik (Norway).

Strengths and weaknesses, comparative added value to other similar tools

Strengths:
(+) Providing a concrete, thought-through methodology to regions that is widely applicable and output-oriented.

Weaknesses:
(-) The tool can be modified rather easily (but good to keep similar to compare results) and is a tool/ methodology for facilitating stakeholder engagement, it generates but does not provide knowledge from the start.

Input(s)

Data on risk factors are collected before the Workshop and complemented by the views of the participants. The risk factors are based on the climate risk models at CMCC/PIK (for the TransformAr project), but in general, could be based on publicly available climate risk data.

Output(s)

The implementation of the Playbook methodology will lead to:
- Description of the hazards, exposure, vulnerability, risks, and impacts of climate change on the community.
- Shortlist measures associated with each level of risk/impact.

Examples of results of the implementation of the methodology (test within TransformAr demonstrators) are available on this link: https://transformar.eu/storage/2023/05/D3.3-Set-of-adaptation-transformation.pdf

Replicability: Cost/effort for (new) usage

Preparation: up to 10 working days depending on the number of participants and the theme to be considered.

Implementation of the workshops: depends on the number of workshops to be implemented (up to 3 half days)

Reporting and writing of the results of the workshop: up to 5 working days

Total: ~18 working days for 1-2 people

Materials or other support available

All materials needed are part of the playbook (partially need to be printed).

Primary RAST step association: Step 3

Geographical area

All areas can be covered with this methodology.

All climate hazards listed can be covered by the tool. The tool provides a process to develop an adaptation pathway for any type of climate hazard. The participants however need to give an overview of the hazard and risk of discussion.

* For the TransformAr case, for each region there are Key Community Systems, these represent the territory’s viable sectors and systems and the ones that are most vulnerable to climate impacts. Engaging the right people within these KCS is vital to implementing successful change.*

Any public or private entity with the ambition to understand how to envision and drive transformational adaptation. Mentors, coaches, scientific and industrial partners will be able to make use of the tools and materials. The playbook will also ease future exploitation and use of the methods by targeted end-users.

The tool is very easy to use, but its success depends on the activity of the participants and the organization of the workshops. Prerequisites: It currently (only) exists in English language. There must be some kind of facilitator present (one person who knows the tool and guides the group).

It is not mandatory but recommended to be guided and advised by experts/consultants who already implemented the methodology before (TranformAr partners who developed and/or tested the methodology) during the preparation phase of the workshops.
