Klimada 2.0 Climate scenarios

The primary objective of the scenario development component of the Klimada 2.0 project, managed by the Institute of Environmental Protection – National Research Institute (IOŚ-PIB), was to provide high-resolution, downscaled climate projections for Poland throughout the twenty-first century to support practical adaptation planning. The open-access dataset is designed to bridge the gap between global climate science and local applications by providing a standardised and credible basis for assessing climate risks, evaluating vulnerabilities across sectors, and developing robust long-term national and municipal adaptation policies. The project aims to support evidence-based decision-making and the development of effective, climate-resilient public policies.

What you can do with it

Input

  • Select a location, administrative area or powiat in Poland.
  • Choose a climate variable, indicator, scenario and future period.
  • Explore high-resolution, downscaled climate projections for the twenty-first century.
  • Compare future 10-year averages with the current-climate reference period.
  • Download data in CSV format for use in Excel or GIS software.

Output

  • Maps and graphs of high-resolution climate projections.
  • Climate variables and a broad range of standard and non-standard indices.
  • Data for Poland and powiat-level administrative units.
  • Downloadable CSV datasets and tabular results with standard deviations.
  • Historical, present and forward-looking climate information presented mainly as 10-year averages.

Use it to

  • Explore how climate conditions may change across Poland.
  • Establish a standard climate evidence base for risk and vulnerability assessments.
  • Compare future conditions with the current-climate reference period.
  • Support national, regional, municipal and sectoral adaptation planning.
  • Reuse projection data in Excel, QGIS and other analytical workflows.
  • Reduce misinterpretation of year-to-year variability by using decadal averages.

Why is it relevant to climate adaptation

Provides a standardised, high-resolution set of downscaled climate projections designed specifically for practical adaptation planning in Poland. Its broad range of indicators, direct comparison with a current-climate baseline and downloadable CSV data make it useful for both non-specialists and technical users working in Excel or GIS. The current projections are based on the IPCC AR5 framework, so users should note that an AR6-based update is planned through Klimada 3.0.

Used in

  • Climate evidence used by Polish cities in preparing adaptation plans.
  • National and municipal adaptation planning across Poland.
  • Strategic planning by Polish ministries beyond the supervising Ministry of Climate and Environment.
  • Use by the Polish meteorological institute and sectoral practitioners.
  • Powiat-level climate analysis for agriculture, biodiversity, energy, forestry, health, tourism, transport, urban areas and water management.
