Regional climate atlas

The Regional Climate Atlas Germany, is based on the current state of research on possible future climate change. The basis are regional climate scenarios from various research institutions, which were brought together for Germany and evaluated at national and regional level. The Climate Atlas is designed to be interactive. Currently, the climate atlas is based on more than 120 regional climate scenarios from various research projects.

Open tool

What you can do with it

Input

  • Select a German region or location
  • Explore more than 120 regional climate scenarios evaluated at national and regional level
  • Examine projected changes in heavy precipitation, heat, drought, wind/storm and cold-wave indicators

Output

  • Interactive maps and graphs of regional climate projections
  • Climate indicators and datasets

Use it to

  • Explore how heat, drought, heavy precipitation, wind and cold-wave conditions may change across Germany
  • Compare regional climate scenarios and trends
  • Build an initial climate evidence base for adaptation planning
  • Support planning in buildings, health, transport, urban and water-management sectors

Why is it relevant to climate adaptation

Consolidates a large ensemble of over 120 regional climate scenarios from multiple German research projects into a single, nationally consistent interactive atlas, saving users from comparing individual studies themselves. Its focus on climate indices and trends is a useful evidence base for early adaptation planning, but it doesn't extend to impact, exposure or adaptation-option analysis.

Used in

  • National and regional climate-trend analysis in Germany, developed by the Helmholtz Gemeinschaft
  • Evidence base for buildings, health, land use planning, transport, urban and water-management adaptation planning
