  • IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Land

    The IPCC launched on 8 August the Special Report on Climate Change and Land, which assesses interlinkages between climate change effects and desertification, land degradation, sustainable land management, food security, and greenhouse gas fluxes in terrestrial ecosystems. The Summary for Policy Makers, as well as the full report, are available on the IPCC website.

    ClimCards, a card game released by the Permanent Secretariat of the Alpine Convention, focuses on achieving different targets for climate change adaptation and mitigation in the Alps, through policy or individual actions, while various unexpected events keep occurring. This game is suitable for 3-6 players of 10 years+ and available in English, German, French, Italian and Slovenian.

  • Launch of the new Belgium national web portal on adaptation

    To find out information about adaptation to climate change in Belgium, the National Climate Commission has developed a new web portal as part of the implementation of the National Adaptation Plan. The portal aims to provide available information about climate change (observations, scenarios, impacts), adaptation policies, vulnerabilities and adaptation measures in 14 sectors.

    Over most of Europe, the average temperature in June 2019 was higher than the 1981-2010 average for the month and it was particularly warm over parts of central and eastern Europe. Around the middle of the month temperature records were broken in eastern Europe. Western and central Europe experienced a short, but intense heatwave during the last week of the month.

    This Joint Research Centre study investigated the effects of extreme climatic events on agricultural commodity markets. It shows that if historical events, such as the 2003 European heatwave, occurred in the near future, the economic impact would be visible not only on regional crop yields and prices but also on international markets.

To secure reliable supply of clean energy, Europe’s energy system needs to adapt and become more climate resilient.
