Four-day forecast of ground-level ozone from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS)

The viewer provides the forecasted hourly concentrations of ground-level ozone (based on satellite data processed by CAMS).

By clicking on the map, a chart showing the changes in hourly ground-level ozone concentrations over the forecast period in a given location can be viewed.  


The classification of the hourly ground-level ozone concentrations in ambient air follows the one used by the the up-to-date air quality data for Europe, where the five categories range from good (< 80 µg/m3) to very poor (> 240 µg/m3). The ambient air quality directives set a population Information threshold for a one-hour average ozone air concentration of 180 µg/m3 and an Alert threshold for an ozone concentration of 240 µg/m3. The exceedance of those thresholds triggers, respectively, the dissemination of information to the public on the risks of exposure and the implementation, if appropriate, of short-term measures to reduce ozone levels.

In 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) published new air quality guidelines to protect human health, updating the 2005 air quality guidelines on the basis of a systematic review of the latest scientific evidence of how air pollution damages human health. The European Commission published a proposal for a revision of the Ambient Air Quality Directive in October 2022, which aligns EU air quality standards more closely with 2021 WHO recommendations, and introduces limit values for all air pollutants currently subject to target values, except for ozone. Ozone is exempted from this change from target to limit value due to the complex characteristics of its formation in the atmosphere which complicate the task of assessing the feasibility of complying with strict limit values.
