The Government of the Republic of Serbia adopted the Climate Change Adaptation Program for the period from 2023 to 2030. The Action Plan for the implementation of the program is also an integral part, covering the period from 2024 to 2026.

On June 20th, 2024, the Wildfire Peer Review Report for Greece was released. The report focuses on wildfire preparedness, response, and recovery and contains information applicable to countries across Europe working to identify resilient pathways to address fire risk. It represents the combined efforts of work from more than 40 different organizations including Greek authorities, peer experts, and the Commission.

The Copernicus Climate Change Service states that June 2024 was warmer globally than any previous June in the data record. This is the thirteenth month in a row that is the warmest for the respective month of the year.

May 2024 was the warmest May on record, marking the 12th consecutive month in which the global average temperature reached a record value for the corresponding month, according to data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service.

The European Commission is setting up a new Climate City Capital Hub, an international finance resource to support cities with private capital to tackle climate change, with the support of both the EU Mission on Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities Mission and the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change.

This Joint Research Centre (JRC) report analysed whether and how the adoption of Transformative Innovation (TI) approaches could add value to several regional climate adaptation strategies and their implementation. It aims to provide evidence-based scientific support to the European policymaking process. This framework has been used to develop cases studies focusing on CCA strategies in 16 territories, grouped into 14 reports [1].

The EU funded Eklipse project released a publication on how to foster resilient coastal communities using Nature-based Solutions (NbS), by providing tools, methods and approaches. Using a Rapid Evidence Assessment (REA), this report synthesises the current state of the evidence concerning the role of NbS and community Empowerment Tools (ET) in addressing coastal challenges such as climate change across Europe.

Climate-ADAPT case studies show implemented adaptation options and initiatives to create and improve the enabling conditions for adaptation at all governance levels. The case studies, which can be accessed via the Case Study Explorer, serve as inspiration on how adaptation options can be implemented in practice under a range of different conditions. A new search option, the 'Adaptation elements' filter, allows to search for case studies reporting on Cost-Benefit analysis, co-benefits and trade-offs as well as the replication/upscaling potential of adaptation actions to support learning on transformative adaptation.

Destination Earth is a flagship initiative of the European Commission to develop a highly accurate digital model of the Earth to monitor and simulate natural phenomena, hazards and the related human activities, including future information on adaptation to climate change.

The 2024 LIFE award winners were selected from very many LIFE projects from across the EU that support the European Green Deal and have been completed within the last year. Projects that restore rivers and plant trees to cool cities were among the winning projects at the annual LIFE Awards. The Climate Action category winner was LIFE TreeCheck, for helping Central European cities tackle climate change using green infrastructure to minimize the urban heat island effect.

Europe is the fastest warming continent in the world, and climate risks are threatening its energy and food security, ecosystems, infrastructure, water resources, financial stability, and people’s health. According to the first European Climate Risk Assessment (EUCRA), published by the European Environment Agency (EEA), many of these risks have already reached critical levels and could become catastrophic without urgent and decisive action.

The Adaptation Dashboard provides regions with data on climate risk and impacts. The revamped version includes new indicators like the Vulnerability Index, Soil Sealing, Water bathing quality, along with an improved interface and data visualization. Users can share feedback via an online survey template available at the top bar.

The European Climate Pact is a movement of people taking steps to build a more sustainable Europe. Their photo competition aims to showcase climate action taking place all around you, in homes, communities and cities, to raise awareness and to inspire change. It will run until Friday 28 June 2024, 12:00 PM CEST.

In September 2023, the German government adopted the draft of the climate adaptation law submitted by the Federal Environment Ministry. The law creates the first strategic framework for precautionary climate adaptation on all administrative levels in Germany. This document is now available in English.

The Regional Adaptation Support Tool (RAST), developed by the EEA under the EU Mission on adaptation to climate change, supports local and regional authorities in planning and implementing climate change adaptation plans and actions. It provides practical guidance through the six key steps of the adaptation policy cycle, supported by useful examples and additional resources.

The Climate and Environment Risk Assessment Center (CERAC) was launched against the backdrop of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, while key findings from the European Climate Risk Assessment (EUCRA) were discussed.

The Future Earth Research School (FERS) will provide an overview of the legal instruments and financial mechanisms aimed at regulating climate change, its risks and future consequences in Europe. This course will take place in Bertinoro (Italy) from 7-18 October 2024.

The latest report from the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change unveils the progress and priorities in the battle against climate change. The Activity Report presents the success stories, data, insights and innovative Mission Projects that aim to support regional and local authorities prepare for the impacts of climate change.

In line with the Horizon Europe 2023-2025 work programme, the European Commission has launched three new calls for proposals under the Adaptation to Climate Change & Restore our oceans and water by 2030 Horizon Europe Missions. A total of €233.7 million in EU funding is available under these calls (of which 123.97 million for adaptation to climate change calls) with deadlines of 18 September 2024.

The European Climate and Health Observatory now provides even more insights into the health impacts of climate change, with additional evidence on the specific risks to children and youth, and on the health effects of droughts, landslides, permafrost thaw and water- and foodborne diseases. With forecasts of pollen concentrations in the air and nine new case studies of implemented responses, also more actionable information is added to the Observatory portal.

The EU-funded LIFE MIDMACC project has concluded that livestock and forest management in mountain areas play a crucial role in the provision of ecosystem services to society. At the same time, it is necessary to adapt these activities to climate change to enhance its resilience.
