The Climate Change Platform for Mediterranean MPAs, developed within the Interreg funded project MPA-Adapt, gathers available tools and materials for climate change adaptation in Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), as well as constant updates from the region. It’s a unique on-line resource for MPA managers, researchers and national and regional administrations that are interested in available knowledge, tools and experiences on climate change impacts, vulnerability and adaptation.
The website is structured into the following main sections:
- Science corner: it helps users to understand the impacts of climate change through news, science stories, articles and snapshots. As the Mediterranean Basin is experiencing the impacts of climate change more than ever, several studies have focused on this topic, in order to support decision-makers in addressing the issues.
- Tools: it offers access to data tools that are available online on climatology, storm events, seawater temperature, invasive species, marine observations on climate impacts etc. Each tool is specialized in a specific dataset and can offer visual and downloadable data of observations, mapping as well for reporting new observations. Tools are divided into Climate observations tools and Marine Biodiversity Climate related tools.
- Guidelines: it offers an overview of technical guidelines for assessing habitats and species' vulnerability to climate change, useful for MPAs managers, technical teams, conservationists, consultancies working on MPAs and related climate change and marine/coastal environmental fields.
- MPAs at Work: this section showcases the best practices and lessons learnt of five Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas on climate change adaptation and monitoring of climate change impacts.
Finally, an interactive map is available from the homepage, to visualize recent climate change-related events. The map will feed on data entered by different users and will present the most recent data through automatic updates.
