Climate Change Adaptation of the Ecosystem Danube Island (LIFE DICCA)

The aim of the LIFE DICCA project is to develop a strategy for adapting inner-city ecosystems to climate change using Danube Island as an example. The planned measures are designed to help protect Danube Island, firstly as an ecosystem and secondly as a local recreation area. The project develops a suitable strategy for adaptation to climate change that will be replicable in cities with similar geographical settings. As the main objective is to increase the resilience of ecosystems on Danube Island, measures are taken to protect and conserve the ecology and wildlife. Additional measures include sustainable maintenance measures, climate-friendly irrigation system, and management flow of visitors. The project also raises awareness in the fields of climate, ecosystems, and biodiversity, while reducing maintenance costs and the CO2 emissions of the island. In this way, it contributes to the EU strategy on adaptation to climate change, the Water Framework Directive, the Floods Directive, the Habitats Directive, the Birds Directive and the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2020+, among others.
