Coastal Zone Management in the Baltic Sea Region (COASTMAN)

Coastman scientifically investigates the interactions between environmental conservation, conflict management and sustainable development in six coastal zones of the Baltic Sea, aiming at developing solutions. The main objectives of the project are: (1) To demonstrate the conditions under which spatial conflict resolution in Coastal Zone Management (CZM) can be handled in a bottom-up perspective starting from practical case studies covering the numerous dimensions and different cultures around the Baltic Sea, (2) To promote long-term capacity building in Coastal Zone Management with a focus on methods for conflict resolution through the development of a network and joint educational program for CZM in the Baltic Sea Region. Pivotal for the Baltic Sea is: (a) a risk analysis, mainly concerning the danger of oil pollution, (b) improving environmental conservation, (c) an international co-operation for support of a sustainable development plan, (d) an exchange of ideas between the Baltic Sea interest groups, (e) solutions to the interacting elements of environment and coastal zone management.
