Tailored climate risk information for financial decision makers (ClimINVEST)

Description:

Financial costs of climate change are rising, and investors need more transparent information to manage their physical risks and climate proof investments. ClimINVEST is a research project aimed at improving understanding of physical climate risk. It has brought climate scientists and investors together to provide transparency on methodologies for physical climate risk assessment and develop guidance tools that inform investors’ risk management processes.

The project facilitated direct collaboration between a consortium of climate experts and a range of financial institutions in France, the Netherlands and Norway. This collaboration led to the development of publicly available resources to help financial institutions address the challenges, from raising climate risk awareness in their institution to interpreting the results of physical climate risk analysis on their portfolios.

A key outcome is the ClimINVEST interactive climate indicators platform, targeting financial decision makers to extend their understanding about climate risk assessment, data needs, climate modeling and extreme events. The platform can help investors disclose climate risk in their investment portfolios and shows a series of co-designed indicators on physical climate risk relevant for investors. These indicators are presented as maps, which can be explored interactively, to get an in depth view of the spatial differences in the impacts of physical climate risk. The material presented contributes to transparency on methodologies for physical climate risk assessment, and can be used as guidance tools for investors.
