Description

This report is a synthesis of  research, mainly European, undertaken since the URBAN-NET Strategic Research Framework was published in 2009. It presents some key findings and recommendations for future strategic research on urban climate resilience. It also includes evidence from different urban and community partnerships of practical interventions and strategies adopted to improve resilience to climate change.
The report opens with a short overview of the critical role for cities in responding to climate change followed by an outline of climate ‘vulnerability’ and ‘resilience’ in an urban context. The report focuses on four key topics: Risk & Uncertainty, Governance, People, Place. For each topic it suggests areas for more detailed consideration in future URBAN-NEXUS activities, including subsequent synthesis reports and corresponding dialogue cafés.
The Annex of Case Studies,  "URBAN CLIMATE RESILIENCE" provides examples of case studies and research to illustrate relevant sections. Summaries of all of the information received on case studies and partnership initiatives are presented in this annex to the main report.
