Overview of further training resources

This document provides access to selected video resources from the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) User Learning Service and other reliable information providers. These videos can help better understand the C3S and the climate data presented in the European Climate Data Explorer (ECDE).

The videos appear in sections related to:

  • understanding climate science and modelling,

  • providing additional information on the scenarios and indices used in the ECDE,

  • descriptions of the C3S tools and data that were used to build the ECDE.

The videos are also tagged to indicate the experience level of the intended audience:

  • Level 1 (L1): Entry level information for users who would benefit from an introduction to the basics of weather and climate, the nature of climate data, and data sources.

  • Level 2 (L2): Intermediate level information for users who would benefit from advice about what can be done with climate data and how to use and interpret it.

  • Level 3 (L3): Expert level information for users with technical expertise.

Climate Science and Modelling

Videos that describe climate models and their use for understanding our changing climate.

CM1 (L1): This short video describes what a climate model is:
How do climate models work

CM2 (L2): The purpose of climate models:
Introduction to Climate Modeling

CM3 (L2): This video is about using model projections of future climate to calculate climate indices. It describes why it can be important to use data from multi-model ensembles and provides advice on choosing models to build a multi-model ensemble:
Climate Projections - Introduction

CM4 (L2): This video introduces the concept of uncertainty for near future and far future timeframes and how the choice of climate projection scenario will impact your chosen climate index for the time horizon you are considering:
Climate Projections - Uncertainty

Scenarios and indices used in the ECDE

Videos that provide context for the presentation of climate index data in the ECDE.

SI1 (L1): This video describes why climate index data is often presented as 30-year climatological averages or as the difference between the value of a climate index in a particular month/season/year and the climatological average:
Data Discovery – Difference Between Weather and Climate

SI2 (L2): This video describes the future climate scenarios that are used as data selection options for ECDE climate indices. It also describes the multi-model ensembles that are the basis of much of the data that is presented on the ECDE:
Data Discovery – Search Strategies

SI3 (L2): The second half of this video explains the structure of the documentation page for a climate index in the Climate Data Store (CDS). All ECDE climate indices have a link to their source data documentation in the CDS:
Introduction to the Climate Data Store and Toolbox - Searching for data

SI4 (L3): CMIP5 global climate model data in the CDS:
Climate Projections - CMIP5 data

SI5 (L3): CORDEX regional climate model data in the CDS:
Climate Projections - CORDEX data

C3S Tools and Data

Videos that describe the Climate Data Store (CDS) tools and data that were used to build the ECDE.

TD1 (L1): An introduction to the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S). The video talks about the usefulness of C3S for policy makers and scientists. It also introduces the concept of past, current and future climate:
Introducing the Copernicus Climate Change Service

TD2 (L2): An introduction to the Climate Data Store (CDS) which could be useful to users who want to go beyond the ECDE and look into the CDS itself. It gives a summary of the different data sources that are used to derive past, current and future climate indices:
Introducing the Climate Data Store

TD3 (L3): The first of a series of videos that describe how to use the CDS toolbox to configure the dynamic maps that are used on the ECDE:
Toolbox Advanced functions Part 1: Dynamic maps (1)

TD4 (L1-L3): This ‘playlist’ from the C3S User Learning Service provides access to many more videos that describe aspects of the data and tools that are used in the ECDE:
