Monitoring and evaluating adaptation

6.3 Finding examples of adaptation monitoring indicators

When devising a set of monitoring indicators for a city or a town, it is often useful to get inspiration from existing indicators developed as part of adaptation planning in other cities, those developed by research institutions or used in national frameworks, or those suggested by international organisations or initiatives, such as the Covenant of Mayors.

The annex to the Covenant of Mayors reporting template contains lists of indicators which could serve as a reference point and source of inspiration for cities and regions. The indicators have been developed based on the needs expressed by Covenant of Mayors signatory cities and the indicators that have proven useful for them.

The resources linked below provide sets of existing indicators for adaptation. As the specific local context and adaptation objectives and targets differ, it is important to choose the indicators carefully, adjust as necessary and complement by self-developed indicators where necessary. The RESIN project has gathered a very detailed compilation of indicators that can be used as a starting point.
