The objective of this work is to explore the ability of climate models in assessing the future energy potential from renewable sources. Specifically, this study focuses on the two renewable sources which are more directly related to meteorological variables, namely photovoltaic solar and wind energy. By using a global climate model for the global scale and a set of regional climate models with finer resolution for Europe, the response of photovoltaic and wind energy up to the mid-21st century (2030-2050) is analysed, and different scenarios of green-house gases and anthropogenic aerosols emissions are compared.
