  • Future plantings of urban trees must consider climate resilience

    03 Apr 2023

In a new study, researchers conducted a global climate-risk analysis for urban forests, assessing the vulnerability of tree and shrub species in cities. More than half of the trees turn out to be at risk from climate change. Urban greening must use species that can cope with future conditions to secure benefits.

  • New EU afforestation and tree-planting guidelines promote adaptation

    03 Apr 2023

The European Commission has recently published the new 'Guidelines on Biodiversity-Friendly Afforestation, Reforestation and Tree Planting' with practical recommendations on how to take climate change into account when creating new forests, restoring existing forests or planting trees in in urban and rural environments. These guidelines support authorities, forest and landowners, managers and civil society to better implement biodiversity-friendly afforestation, reforestation and tree-planting projects at a local level.

  • New products of the LIFE Tree Check project on urban green infrastructure

    28 Mar 2023

In the Central European project LIFE Tree Check, the following products are available: the book Livable and Resilient City, the software Tree Check PRO, videos on city cooling and flyers on how to adapt to climate change.

  • JRC report: Drought in Europe – March 2023

    17 Mar 2023

The European Drought Observatory of the Joint Research Centre, in the frame of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service, published a technical report on expected drought in Europe. It discusses the consequences of an exceptionally dry and warm winter in 2022, a historically low snow water equivalent in the Alps and it forecasts a season that can be critical for water resources in Europe.

  • Paved surfaces that allow soil to ‘breathe’ may be the best option for urban trees

    17 Mar 2023

Trees make towns and cities better places to live, but they often need to co-exist with practical surfaces in the built environment. A five-year study compared the effects of three types of paving on trees.

  • Flood and drought analysis shows that impact-reduction strategies are effective – but fail in unprecedented events

    09 Mar 2023

A new Nature publication suggests that while generally effective, flood and drought risk management strategies are usually not designed to cope with unprecedented events – which may increase with climate change.

  • EEA briefing on ‘Assessing the costs and benefits of climate change adaptation'

    03 Mar 2023

There is an urgent need to speed up the implementation of adaptation measures according to the EEA briefing ‘Assessing the costs and benefits of climate change adaptation'. In particular, a better understanding is needed about the costs and benefits of adaptive actions — and the costs of adaptation compared to the costs of failing to take action. The briefing also suggests methodological improvements in cost-benefit analyses.

  • IPCC interactive atlas

    28 Feb 2023

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) developed a tool to explore global and regional observed data and model simulations. It underpins the Working Group I contribution to the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6). A regional information component provides access to climate data from global and regional databases. A regional synthesis component provides qualitative information about changes in so-called Climatic Impact-Drivers.

  • Hungarian national adaptation platform substantially upgraded

    27 Feb 2023

The Hungarian national Adaptation GeoInformation System (NAGiS) was substantially enlarged since its first development phase. It provides now access to a Local Adaptation Decision-support Application and to a Settlement-level Adaptation Barometer for assessing adaptation needs at settlement level. It provides numerous guidelines such as a methodology for a complex vulnerability assessment as well as solutions for adaptation in selected policy sectors such as on adaptation in Hungarian tourist destinations. In the near future the macro-regional extension of the system is planned.

  • The European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) launches a new public dashboard covering all of its projects and programmes

    24 Feb 2023

The European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) has launched its public online dashboard bringing together all the programmes that have been entrusted to it by the European Commission, including project on adaptation to climate change. The dashboard will allow everyone to find up to date information about the projects supported in each programme, cross-reference them and extract data for potential re-use.
