  • Tackling the effects of climate change on health in the Mediterranean and surrounding regions

    This workshop report includes assessments from the region and recommendations for policy-makers and the scientific community. The Mediterranean and Middle East regions are “hotspots” and the effects of climate change are greater here than in other regions. Topics addressed during the workshop included the effects of extreme weather events, water shortage, food security, infectious diseases, air pollution, and health issues of displaced populations, among others.

  • Commission launches EU missions to tackle major challenges including on adaptation to climate change

    The Commission launched five new EU missions, a new and innovative way to work together to tackle big challenges in health, climate and the environment. They include a set of actions, such as research and innovation projects, policy measures and legislative initiatives, as a novelty of Horizon Europe and also an original concept in EU policy, bringing together several Commission services. Among the five missions aiming to deliver solutions to key global challenges by 2030, is the 'Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change and societal transformation', supporting at least 150 European regions and communities to become climate resilient by 2030.

  • Public consultation on WHO draft COP26 Special Report on Climate Change and Health

    The World Health Organization (WHO) launches public consultation on draft COP26 Special report on climate change and health, with the deadline for comments on the 25 August 2021. The COP26 Special Report: 'The Health Argument for Climate Action', aims to raise the health voice, health arguments and health urgency of tackling the climate crisis. It reflects the growing evidence and availability of solutions to maximize the health benefits of tackling climate change, while also offering a clear set of asks and proposed solutions from the global health community to climate change policy makers at COP26.

  • Impact of heat waves during the COVID-19 pandemic and the lessons learned from Summer 2020

    On 12 May 2021 the International Association of National Public Health Institutes (IANPHI) held a webinar to discuss how COVID-19 affected heat waves risks in 2020. Experts were discussing the key lessons learned by the national public health institutes and other public health stakeholders, and exchanged solutions and good practices.

  • European Commission invites project proposals on the health impacts of climate change - €60 million available under the Horizon Europe programme

    The aim of this call for project proposals topic is to identify, monitor and quantify the direct and indirect impacts on human health, including in occupational settings, and related risk factors correlated to climate change. Projects are expected to contribute, inter alia to the European Climate and Health Observatory.

These include tackling the health impacts of the pandemic, dealing with the climate and ecological emergency, and addressing social and economic inequalities.

  • Fifty cities commit to going above and beyond for the environment

    The European Commission’s Green City Accord has hit a milestone number of cities willing to adopt even more ambitious environmental protection targets. Alba Iulia (Romania), Košice (Slovakia) and Grenoble (France), the European Green Capital 2022, all made their commitment official. These cities join other signatories in setting ambitious targets to tackle pollution, protect nature and biodiversity, and to support the circular economy and local climate adaptation actions.

  • On the road to increased environment and climate capacity in the Turkish health sector

    Members of the Turkish Health Collaboration on Climate Change and Environment Project have established the working group Climate Change & Health. With a webinar on heatwaves and health, one of the key climate themes to Turkish health participants was presented. Further webinars and materials will be launched in the next months, including an interdisciplinary briefing.
