The Local Biodiversity Action Fund supports biodiversity projects across all 31 local authorities. LBAF-funded projects typically include biodiversity education and awareness initiatives, bird conservation actions, invasive species management, and wetland surveys.
The fund is made available annually, in line with a grant application and award process, to biodiversity officers (where appointed) and heritage officers in local authorities.

Type of funding
Funding rate (percentage of covered costs)
Subject to the provision of an agreed level of co-funding from the local authority’s own resources. Funding is awarded under the following conditions:
- It is subject to an agreed level of co-funding from the local authority’s own resources.
- It must be spent on a project directly supporting one or more actions from the National Biodiversity Action Plan (NBAP), or targeting Invasive Alien Species (IAS) listed under the EU IAS Regulation (list of Union concern).
- Project outputs must be reported to the Department before the end of the calendar year in which funding is awarded.
