The cornerstone of the Valencia region’s progress in climate action lies in the unwavering commitment of its policymakers who have made climate adaptation a top priority, offering crucial support and resources. By dismantling silos and fostering coordination mechanisms, they ensure a unified approach to climate adaptation across sectors. Moreover, the region emphasises the importance of identifying and accessing a wide range of funding sources to implement adaptation actions effectively on a larger scale.

In this success story, we share the experience of the Blekinge region in Sweden which has, through the Mission, developed new ways to raise awareness of climate risks and to ensure climate adaptation is a priority for policymakers.

This success story focuses on the Emilia-Romagna region proactively addressing climate challenges, particularly flooding, as part of its ambitious goal to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. The region employs comprehensive spatial planning to integrate water-resilient activities, aiming not only to mitigate the immediate impacts of flooding but also contribute to long-term environmental sustainability and resilience against future climate-related threats.

This case study highlights Drenthe's initiative to convene neighbouring regions for a roundtable discussion, co-organised by the provinces of Drenthe and Gelderland, on climate adaptation synergies. Through collaborative dialogue, the event aimed to identify strategic alignments and enhance collective resilience against climate change impacts.

This success story showcases the adaptation efforts of the Flemish region, Leuven, in Belgium and how these have been propelled further through its association to the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change. By focusing on Nature-based Solutions, governance and spatial planning, Leuven is tackling its difficult climate challenges, including flooding and extreme heat.
