    A policy brief and a study ‘Nordic Perspectives on Transboundary Climate Risk’ of the Nordic Council of Ministers show how floods and forest fires and other climate change impacts cascade over borders, resulting for example in higher prices or disturbances in supplies of food commodities. The report makes recommendations on how Nordics can better address those risks together.

    The European Environment Agency (EEA) briefing ‘Cooling buildings sustainably in Europe’ analyses how to best alleviate heat stress in buildings and its potential impacts on vulnerable groups, health and inequalities and at same time decrease the energy use. The frequent heatwaves and increasing vulnerability of the population will lead to a substantial increase in adverse health impacts in Europe unless adaptation measures are taken.

    To make open sharing of research outputs the norm in climate science, Creative Commons, SPARC and Electronic Information for Libraries (EIFL) launched a 4-year Open Climate Campaign. The climate campaign will go beyond just sharing climate and biodiversity knowledge, to expand the inclusive, just and equitable knowledge policies and practices that enable better sharing.

  • LIFE LUNGS: Towards a more resilient Lisbon UrbaN Green InfraStructure as an adaptation to climate change

    The LIFE LUNGS project, co-financed by the EU and Municipality of Lisbon, aims to make the city more resilient to rising temperatures, and adapt to the effects of heat waves and water scarcity. This needs to be done in line with the climate policies adopted by the municipality and through the implementation of urban green infrastructure. A key measure is to increase tree coverage density along Lisbon's urban green infrastructure by planting of 240,000 trees and shrubs in the green spaces of the city.

    The European Parliament and the European Committee of the Regions join forces ahead of the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) calling on Member States to raise climate actions. The European Parliament COP27 resolution recognizes the urgent need for multilevel and cooperative action and the involvement of local and regional authorities in the implementation of the Paris agreement, it supports locally-led approaches towards adaptation and biodiversity protection, calls for mandatory adaptation and climate vulnerability tests at local level and stresses the need for better channeling financial resources to the local level.

    The European Climate and Health Observatory now includes a map viewer visualizing the availability of urban green spaces to vulnerable groups. The viewer allows to explore the availability of urban green to the elderly and to unemployed people as well as around schools and hospitals.

  • Experts met in Athens to take action on climate change adaptation and urban resilience

    Cities and regions across Europe are working hard to foster resilience and adaptation, and are eager to exchange knowledge and experiences related to these efforts. The 9th edition of the European Urban Resilience Forum (EURESFO) took place in Athens, Greece, from 14 to 15 September gathering city representatives, experts, and stakeholders working at the forefront of climate adaptation, urban resilience, and disaster risk management.

  • EEA launches new report on climate and health

    On 9 November, EEA will launch its new report ‘Climate change as a threat to health and well-being in Europe: focus on heat and infectious diseases’. During the online launch event, EEA and the European Commission will discuss the report’s key findings, solutions to minimise the climate-related health threats, and insights into related EU policy responses. Participants can discuss actions to minimise health threats through more resilient health systems.
