Nature-Based Solutions to Climate Change Adaptation in Urban Areas - Linkages between Science, Policy and Practice

Description

This book gives a wide overview of research on nature-based solutions (NBS) to climate change adaption in urban areas. The book is open access and consists of 19 chapters. Cases from Europe and beyond bring together research findings and experiences from science, policy and practice to highlight and debate the importance of nature-based solutions to climate change adaptation in urban areas. Emphasis is given to the potential of nature-based approaches to create multiple-benefits for society. The expert contributions present recommendations for creating synergies between ongoing policy processes, scientific programmes and practical implementation of climate change and nature conservation measures in global urban areas. Examples are global, but many of them are in Europe. The book discusses socio-economic implications in relation to socio-economic equity, fairness and justice considerations when implementing NBS.

The book is divided according to four themes:
1) Setting the Scene: Climate Change and the Concept of Nature-Based Solutions (four chapters)
2) Evidence for Nature-Based Solutions to Adapt to Climate Change in Urban Areas (five chapters)
3) Health and Social Benefits of Nature-Based Solutions in Cities (four chapters)
4) Policy, Governance and Planning Implications for Nature-Based Solutions (five chapters)

A specific chapter (n.10) is focused on buildings "Nature-Based Solutions and Buildings – The Power of Surfaces to Help Cities Adapt to Climate Change and to Deliver Biodiversity".

The book is the part of the Theory and Practice of Urban Sustainability Transitions book series (TPUST).
