  • EU Mission Adaptation signatories now number over 300

    04 Apr 2023

The European Commission has, to date, welcomed the signatures of 301 regions and local authorities who have joined the EU Mission for Adaptation to Climate Change. It will help these regions and local authorities to better understand, prepare for and manage climate risks, as well as to develop innovative solutions to build a climate-resilient future.

  • Future plantings of urban trees must consider climate resilience

    03 Apr 2023

In a new study, researchers conducted a global climate-risk analysis for urban forests, assessing the vulnerability of tree and shrub species in cities. More than half of the trees turn out to be at risk from climate change. Urban greening must use species that can cope with future conditions to secure benefits.

  • New EU afforestation and tree-planting guidelines promote adaptation

    03 Apr 2023

The European Commission has recently published the new 'Guidelines on Biodiversity-Friendly Afforestation, Reforestation and Tree Planting' with practical recommendations on how to take climate change into account when creating new forests, restoring existing forests or planting trees in in urban and rural environments. These guidelines support authorities, forest and landowners, managers and civil society to better implement biodiversity-friendly afforestation, reforestation and tree-planting projects at a local level.

  • JRC report: Drought in Europe – March 2023

    17 Mar 2023

The European Drought Observatory of the Joint Research Centre, in the frame of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service, published a technical report on expected drought in Europe. It discusses the consequences of an exceptionally dry and warm winter in 2022, a historically low snow water equivalent in the Alps and it forecasts a season that can be critical for water resources in Europe.

  • Paved surfaces that allow soil to ‘breathe’ may be the best option for urban trees

    17 Mar 2023

Trees make towns and cities better places to live, but they often need to co-exist with practical surfaces in the built environment. A five-year study compared the effects of three types of paving on trees.

  • Flood and drought analysis shows that impact-reduction strategies are effective – but fail in unprecedented events

    09 Mar 2023

A new Nature publication suggests that while generally effective, flood and drought risk management strategies are usually not designed to cope with unprecedented events – which may increase with climate change.
