New Budapest Declaration commits European countries to develop ‘Health National Adaptation Plans’

Adopted on 7 July 2023 by the countries of the WHO European Region, the Budapest Declaration formulates political commitments and actions to address the health risks posed by the triple crisis of climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss. It could become a real game-changer for the health sector’s engagement with climate change, and for the climate policy contribution to health. With regard to adaptation policy, a key commitment is the development, updating and implementation of ‘Health National Adaptation Plans’, either as standalone documents, or as a part of wider National Adaptation Plans.

Stockholm Statement: national public health institutes' role in preparedness and response to climate crisis

National Public Health Institutes (NPHIs) from around the world met in Stockholm, Sweden early December to address and find solutions to the biggest challenges to the public health security. In the Stockholm statement they highlight the urgent need to apply the lessons learned from COVID-19 to address other health threats, including explicitly climate change. NPHIs have a vital role in handling the crises that affect human health.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) have launched the Health and Climate Change Country Profiles to give an overview of critical areas for action to combat these threats, and to provide links to available resources. Developed in collaboration with national health services, they summarize evidence of the climate hazards and health risks facing countries.

On 9 November, EEA will launch its new report ‘Climate change as a threat to health and well-being in Europe: focus on heat and infectious diseases’. During the online launch event, EEA and the European Commission will discuss the report’s key findings, solutions to minimise the climate-related health threats, and insights into related EU policy responses.
